A meter (the device, not the distance) is a small piece of high tech which consists of a magnet and a coil. (whoops ! Never heard of a coil ? then click here or here or here to learn about it.) As the coil produces a magnetic field when electrical current flows through it, it gets pushed away from the magnet which is mounted nearby and thus moves the pointer it is tightened to.
The above description (Isn't it complicated ?) is the reason why the circuit symbol of meters just contain two main parts of the device itself: The chassis and the pointer or the unit you are measuring. But don't get angry now if you also read the above description too, because some extra knowledge doesn't hurt. By the way, this one was for free !
